About
Museum Beelden aan Zee is tucked away in the dunes behind Scheveningen Boulevard, underneath Paviljoen von Wied. This museum houses successive exhibitions of work by national and international sculptors. Visitors can admire sculptures outside on the terraces as well as inside the museum. The building, which overlooks the sea, was designed by architect Wim Quist and completed in 1994. Beelden aan Zee is the only museum in the Netherlands that specialises in sculptures. The museum has its own academic Sculpture Institute, with a large library of books on sculpture. The museum is run by a small team of professional staff, and 175 voluntary workers ensure its continued existence. Jazz and classical concerts are held there every month, and various theatre performances are given throughout the year. Sculptor Tom Otterness’s unusual Fairytale Sculptures and Igor Mitorai’s huge mask in the dunes can be seen on the boulevard near the museum. The Fairytale Sculptures have been temporarily removed due to current renovation work on the boulevard. The Hague Student Card holders are entitled to 50% discount on the admission fee. This means you pay € 4.25 instead of € 8.50.
